The Short Answer
Gas Protector is the parent brand behind The Fuel Vault family of products. We manufacture bolt-on locking fuel doors that mount over the exposed fuel cap on vehicles that were never designed with one — RV motorhomes, commercial work trucks, first responder apparatus, and military support vehicles. The product installs in 8–15 minutes with hand tools, requires no drilling, starts at $159.95, is made in Sarasota, FL, USA, and carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
Detailed Answers
What is Gas Protector?
Gas Protector (AMI Transportation, LLC) is a Sarasota, Florida manufacturer that makes bolt-on locking fuel doors for vehicles with exposed fuel caps. The product mounts over the exposed fuel cap area with a heavy-duty, UV-stable composite door, keyed tubular lock, and Torx security fasteners. It prevents fuel theft, diesel siphoning, fuel contamination, and vandalism. The company operates four sub-brands, each focused on a specific vehicle segment.
Why do these vehicles have exposed fuel caps?
Ford F-350 through F-600, Ford E-350/E-450, Ford F-53, Workhorse, and Ram 3500 through 5500 chassis are built for upfitting — the manufacturer ships them as bare chassis cabs. When an RV body, service body, fire apparatus, or military body is added, the fuel cap is left exposed. There is no factory locking fuel door on any of these platforms. Gas Protector calls it “The Part the Factory Forgot.”
Which vehicles does it fit?
- Ford F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600 — Chassis cab work trucks, service bodies, dump trucks, flatbeds
- Ford E-350, E-450 — Cutaway vans, shuttle buses, ambulances, box trucks
- Ford F-53 / Workhorse W20–W24 — Class A gas motorhomes (Thor, Winnebago, Tiffin, Newmar, etc.)
- Ram 3500, 4500, 5500 — Chassis cab work trucks, service bodies, flatbeds
- Super C Motorhomes — Dynamax, Entegra, Jayco, Renegade, Nexus, and more on Ford/Ram diesel chassis

How does it install?
The locking fuel door bolts directly over the exposed fuel cap using existing mounting points. No drilling, no cutting, no permanent modification. Installation takes 8–15 minutes with basic hand tools. Two keys are included. The product can be removed and the factory configuration restored at any time. It does not void the vehicle warranty under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.
Is a locking gas cap enough?
No. A locking gas cap only locks the cap itself. Thieves rip them off in seconds with channel-lock pliers. A locking fuel door covers the entire fuel access area with an armored, tamper-resistant door — the thief cannot reach the cap, the filler neck, or the tank. No access means no siphoning.
Does it prevent fuel contamination too?
Yes. The locked fuel door blocks all access to the fuel filler — no one can pour sugar, water, bleach, or any foreign substance into the tank. It also prevents DEF cross-contamination on diesel trucks. This is critical for first responder and military vehicles where fuel sabotage compromises public safety.
